The Preservation Department is responsible for the management of collections preservation programming for the Museum Center as well as conservation treatment services for the two-dimensional collections.

The Preservation Department operates a conservation laboratory and preservation microfilming operation. Repairs and treatments on a broad range of materials including books, pamphlets, manuscripts, posters, architectural drawings, broadsides, etc. are performed in the laboratory. The department prepares collection items for use in the Museum Center's exhibit programs and offers installation assistance to exhibit staff.

The Preservation Department staff, in conjunction with library and museum curators, monitors storage and handling practices and conducts a comprehensive preservation program designed to maintain the collections in useable condition. As part of the preservation program, the department conducts environmental monitoring, emergency and disaster planning for the collections, pest management, collections maintenance, staff training, and community outreach and educational programs.
